About Akoya and Tahitian Cultured Pearls

Akoya are the classic round white pearl and were the first round pearls to be successfully cultured. Darker, treated black Akoya are also very popular and have been available in finer jewelry houses since the 1930’s. When choosing an Akoya ring, look for pearl with a clear reflection, mirror-like shine and good roundness. Their size ranges between 3mm to 10mm with an average of 6mm to 7mm - As a result, larger than average pearls will have a higher value.

Tahitian cultured pearls display a darker metallic shine. Their size ranges between 8mm to 17mm. The average is in the 10mm to 11mm range so, larger sizes will have higher value. When choosing a Tahitian ring, also look for a pearl with a clear reflection, dark satiny shine and good roundness.
