 Are black pearls dyed?
Answer

Black freshwater and Japanese Akoya pearls are indeed color enhanced; however this does not diminish their quality or discount their authenticity in any way. During the dying process, not only the surface but the entire pearl's color is transformed permanently. Dyed black pearls were first released during the opulent decade of the 1920s and have continued to be sold in fine jewelry stores since that time.  Tahitian pearls are the only natural color black pearls.
